Privacy policy
Effective 1 November 2026
The Fridge is a household planner app: who's in for dinner, a shared noticeboard, events and a shopping list. It's made by Scott Millar, an independent developer in New South Wales, Australia ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the app collects, why, who else handles it, and the choices you have. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.
The short version
- We collect only what the app needs to work for your household.
- What you add is shared with the people in your household, and no one else.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics, and we never sell your information.
- You can delete your account and data at any time.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address and password. Passwords are stored in scrambled (hashed) form, so no one, including us, can read them.
- Profile: the display name, colour and optional profile photo you choose.
- Household content: your weekly plans (in, late or out), dinner menu, noticeboard notes, events and shopping list items, plus the household's name and invite code.
- Notifications: if you turn on push notifications, a push token that lets us send alerts to your phone, and your notification choices.
- Security records: a short record of wrong invite codes entered, used to stop people guessing codes. Our database provider also keeps standard logs (such as sign-in times and IP addresses) to keep the service secure.
Reminder settings (such as "plan your week" and dinner check-ins) are stored only on your phone. The app doesn't use your location or contacts. It uses your photos only when you choose a profile picture.
How we use it
- To run the app: sign you in, show your household's shared information, and keep it in sync across everyone's phones.
- To send the notifications and emails you ask for, such as alerts when someone adds something, and password reset codes.
- To keep the app secure and prevent misuse.
We don't use your information for advertising or profiling, and we don't send marketing email.
Who can see it
People in your household can see your name, colour, photo and weekly plans, and everything posted to the household. Anyone with your household's invite code can join it, so only share the code with people you trust. Owners can generate a new code and remove members at any time.
Profile photos are stored at hard-to-guess web addresses so they load quickly in the app. Anyone given the exact address could view the photo, but the addresses aren't published or listed anywhere.
Services we rely on
We use a few trusted providers to run the app. They handle your information only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase hosts the database, sign-in and photo storage.
- Expo, together with Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (Android) and Apple Push Notification service (iPhone), delivers push notifications. Notifications include a short description of what was added.
- Resend sends account emails such as password reset codes.
- Cloudflare hosts this website.
Some of these providers store or process information outside Australia, mainly in the United States. If you tap "Add to Google Calendar" on an event, the event details are sent to Google under Google's own privacy policy.
We don't share your information with anyone else unless the law requires it.
Keeping it safe
Information is encrypted in transit, and database security rules mean each household can reach only its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but if a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we will tell you promptly and explain what happened and what you can do.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. When you delete your account it is removed straight away, apart from copies in routine database backups, which are overwritten within 7 days. Things you posted for your household stay for the other members until they delete them. If you're the last person in a household, the whole household is deleted with your account.
Your choices
- See and correct: you can view and edit your profile, plans and posts in the app at any time.
- Notifications: turn push notifications and reminders on or off on the Household tab.
- Delete: tap Delete my account at the bottom of the Household tab, or use our account deletion page.
- Ask: email us for a copy of your information or with any privacy question.
Children
The Fridge is made for households, including families with children. A child should use it only with a parent or guardian's permission, and that adult should set up or supervise the child's account. We don't knowingly collect more information from children than the app needs to work. A parent or guardian can ask us to delete a child's account at any time.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for important changes, let you know in the app.
Questions or complaints: email support@thefridgeapp.app. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
